PORT CHARLOTTE — Baseball America released its updated rankings of the top 10 Tampa Bay Rays prospects for 2015 on Monday, and the list has a decidedly different look than it did last year.
Right-hander Jake Odorizzi (No. 1 in 2014) and outfielder Kevin Kiermaier (No. 10) graduated off the list, and shortstops Hak-Ju Lee and Tim Beckham, pitchers Taylor Guerrieri and Enny Romero, catcher Nick Ciuffo and outfielder Andrew Toles have all fallen outside the top 10.
Here are the Rays top 10 prospects for 2015:
1. Willy Adames, SS
2. Alex Colome, RHP
3. Justin O’Conner, C
4. Adrian Rondon, SS
5. Nathan Karns, RHP
6. Mikie Mahtook, CF
7. Ryan Brett, 2B
8. Brent Honeywell, RHP
9. Blake Snell, LHP
10. Casey Gillaspie, 1B
Adames takes over the top spot in the organization after being acquired from the Detroit Tigers in the David Price trade, and newly signed 16-year-old Dominican shortstop Rondon slots in at No. 4. Gillaspie, the Rays’ 2014 first-round pick, comes in at No. 10 after a solid first season of pro ball.
O’Conner and Snell both rise into the top 10 after big years with the Charlotte Stone Crabs last season. Triple-A Durham’s Colome, Karns and Mahtook are all candidates to make an impact at the big-league level this season.
